Activity 4: Google Suite

I made a Google Form to use with my students the first week of school.  I usually do a "How well do you know Mrs. Nelson" quiz at the end of the first week of school on a paper form.  I am excited to do it digitally this year.

I began using Google Drive during the 2014-2015 school year.  I find it to be very easy to access and use with my students.  I love being able to work on my assignments at home and easily have them on my school computer as well.

  • How will you use your Google Drive in your teaching practice?
I use Google Drive with my colleagues for staff development and our PLC work. I love that we can work on the same document at the same time and it automatically saves. No more lost work or papers. I use Google Drive to create journal assignments that I post to Google Classroom for my students twice a week. They submit their work to me in the form of a Google Doc. I had never made my own Google Form before today (but I have used forms other teachers in my team have created). I think that the Google Suite of options is teacher and student friendly and easy to use and access anywhere.
  • How could cloud computing be a useful tool in your classroom?
I learned that Google Drive is a form of "Cloud Computing" which is a term I had not heard before. I was unaware that there were other ways to do cloud computing other than Google. I think this is a useful tool in the classroom because all the work is saved automatically in a digital format. This allows me to review student work from anywhere. Students do not lose their assignments and can do their work at home or at school.
  • What are the pros and cons of using it with students?
Students are more engaged when doing work on the chromebooks. Students can turn in their work without having to deal with a paper copy. I think we do have to be careful of giving kids too many assignments digitally without adequate typing instruction. I noticed many of my students developing bad habits with their typing positions last year. This year I plan to teach correct fingerings earlier in the year so this will not be as much of a problem.

  2. Ahhh, their typing is so awful! We LOVE google classroom! The quiz is a cool idea I will have to see it. Maybe I'll even take the quiz. I think I know Mrs. Nelson pretty well. :)

  3. You did a great job discussing the Google Suite for this activity. I took your form and I hope I did well. I am a big fan of "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM."

Your ideas for using the Google Suite in your PLC are excellent. The more we work together with other teachers to create the materials we use in class, the less of a burden is placed on each individual teacher to create all the materials for their class.

Your comments about typing are insightful. Typing is one of those skills that we do not necessarily teach explicitly but it is something that students need to learn and can be embedded into other areas of our teaching. How can we embed typing skills into reading, writing, math, social studies, etc. when we use technology during the teaching of these subjects?

  4. I love that you made an electronic version of your quiz! I remember you sharing that idea last year, and this year I'm hoping to not only use your idea, but also jump on the digital quiz boat!

As for typing, I like Ryan's suggestion of integrating authentic typing opportunities into multiple subjects. I think that will be one of my goals this year!
