Intermediate Task
I created a quiz for a book I do with my high potential 4th graders called Running Out of Time by Margaret Haddix. I was absolutely amazed by how easy it was to grade with Flubaroo. I had my daughter take the quiz 5 times using a different alias every time. The only part that was difficult to grade properly was the short answer questions because if the word was misspelled by the student, it was counted incorrect. I went back and used the grade questions by hand tool to correct those questions on the quiz.
This Flubaroo add-on made correcting sooo easy. I would like to make a ton of forms for all of my formative assessments - grading these can be such a pain and Flubaroo grades in seconds. You get a percentage for each student, and it is super easy to tell where the class as a whole is struggling. I can see how using Flubaroo could guide instruction.
Running Out of Time Quiz
I created a branching form for a review/ formative assessment of identifying the elements of a fictional story. Branching forms are a great way to differentiate instruction because students that need more help with a skill can get linked to a review page and complete some practice problems or watch a video that reviews the skill. Students who are already competent, do not need to review and do more practice problems.
Creating the branching form is tricky and time consuming, however. I wanted to link students to a Brainpop video to review certain story elements, but I learned that you can only link to videos that are available on Youtube. I was able to share the link, however, so students can open Brainpop in a new window. Brainpop is a website that Pinewood pays to offer to students. A username and password is required to access this website. Unfortunately, I had to put the log-in information on the form so students would remember to log-in. I don't know if this is allowed.
When I was all done creating this form, I remembered that Ryan suggested that we have a couple of questions that essentially ask the same thing to make sure that students really understand the concepts and are not just making lucky guesses. Inserting another question to piggyback on the previous one messed up all of my page links. It would be much easier to make changes like this BEFORE making the form - in the planning stage. So I reverted to my original form and made a review page at the end which had open response type questions to test their knowledge at the end of the quiz.
Story Elements Quiz
Where has Fluabroo been all our lives?!? Isn't it great?!? I didn't even realize there was a "grade by hand" option so I did not include any written response questions. It would be great to have some written responses to ensure that we are asking higher level thinking questions.
ReplyDeleteI love the video that was in your story elements quiz, and I did like that you reworded questions. Your re-working the quiz was worth it! I love Flubaroo as well - and Running Out of Time!
ReplyDeleteGreat video and questions! Agree that planning for the branching questions can be tricky!
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is pretty awesome how the branching forms allow more students the opportunity to not just guess an answer. If they are honest and click to see the video right away because they aren't understanding, we will get more authentic information from students. Thanks for posting, Lisa!
ReplyDeleteExcellent work. I liked both of your forms. Flubaroo is great and figuring out how to grade questions by hand is good because you can then grade short answer and even long answer questions by hand and let everything else grade itself.
ReplyDeleteOnce you get used to branching forms they are pretty easy and can be made much faster. Your form was great with its links to videos or websites that showed students why the correct answers were correct. One thing I should mention is that you can turn off the feature that allows students to go backward which is a good idea on a branching form because if they realize they went on the wrong branch they could hit the back button to go back to the previous question and fix it without going through the rest of that leg of the form. You can put the links to brain pop videos in your forms. You are only using them with your students and they have access to the username and password anyway right?
I agree with both the AWESOMENESS of Flubaroo, as well as how time consuming it is to make branching forms.
ReplyDeleteAlso-nice job on the story elements quiz! I may have to steal that from you...!
