Activity 6: Google Classroom

I completed the beginner and intermediate assignments for Google Classroom.  Even though I used this in my classroom last year, I was able to refine and further practice all of the capabilities of Google Classroom.  I had never considered numbering my assignments before, but this was a great tip for organization.  I will use all four of the assignments I created with my students next year.  I even used the add-on I created in Assignment 5 ("Openclipart") to make all of my assignments more visually appealing that ever before.

I am interested in how 003 - Two Truths and a Fib will work in my classroom when all the students can edit the same document.  I have had difficulty with this in the past when 30 students are working on the same document at the same time.  It might be that they will have to complete the assignment at their own pace so fewer students are trying to edit at the same time.  I like that the responses will be collaborative and we can discuss as a class with all student responses on the same document.

I am excited to use Google Classroom again in my classroom because it is extremely easy to use and student friendly as well.  I wish there was an easy way to print some the student assignments so I can have a paper copy to add to the end of the year journals I create for every student.  Last year I printed 3-4 journal entries, but it took forever to print one for each child.  I had to go into each student's file individually and print the assignment.  I think it would be easier for the teacher to see all the entries/ print all the entries for an assignment in one long feed.  I wonder if this is possible, and I just don't know how to do it!

You can participate in my Google Classroom with this code:  i93qjs

  1. I agree with you Lisa about the printing. I wish there was a way to print from our chromebooks. Then it would be easier for students to print their own work, and show it publicly in class on the walls. It would give students more ownership and pride in their work.

  2. I agree about the numbering system being a useful way to organize the assignments. I'm new to Google Classroom, so I'm thankful I got that tip before getting too deep into Classroom. It's good to know that printing can be difficult, so I'll keep that in mind!

  3. I completely agree about the printing! I know that some of the students' documents get saved to a folder on our google drive but we still have to go in and click on each individual assignment to print. There should be an option, one click to print all!

  4. Agree on printing! I suppose for the district, that would be a logistical nightmare, to set up printer drivers on all those Chromebooks. Maybe some day!

I'm in Phase 2 of Chromebooks, so I was happy to read about that numbering system before I even get things rolling. Kind of how I wish I'd set up organization in my Drive before I had a rat's nest of documents all over the place!!!!

  5. Good job with your Google Classroom. I have made some comments within the program for you to check out. As for putting all the documents in one file, you can create a form that has a paragraph response question and have your students copy the body of a document into the form and submit it. Then you can get an add-on for spreadsheets called save as doc which will create 1 document for you that has all of the student's responses in the same document. This will not keep the formatting of the document that the students created but it will maintain the written content.

  6. I totally agree with the issues of having 30 students working on the same document. I too have used collaborate work in small groups, but with a bigger group mentality students can get off track.

  7. Definitely agree on the printing issue! Beyond that, I too liked the numbering system. I think it will definitely up the organization of this already organized tool!
