I decided to do Kahoot! and Poll Everywhere for this assignment. I have some experience already with Kahoot! and I love it for an engaging way to prepare for tests or do some informal assessment in the classroom. Kahoot! offers a public sharing tool so you can easily use the Kahoots! of others and not have to re-create each one you do. This is a huge plus for a busy teacher. I found it to be really easy to make my own Kahoot! as well. Kahoot! does not allow the teacher to do individual formative assessment because you can't see what each student is choosing for their answer. It is better for use as a test of how the class as a whole is understanding - "How many students are getting it?"
I made a Kahoot! called Fun Friday with Mrs. Nelson to be used as a review of skills at the end of the week.

Poll Everywhere was similar to Kahoot!, but you can ask more than just multiple choice questions. There is an open response option. I can see using this for exit slips or again, to get a feel for how the students as a whole group are getting it. I might also use Poll Everywhere as a check-in morning meeting activity. I realized after making this poll, that I have to activate each question before students can answer. So for the purpose of a morning greeting activity as students come into the classroom, I can only ask 1 question at a time. Poll Everywhere has a pre-generated question page where you can poll students about answers to various subjects without having to write the questions and multiple choice answers yourself. But, it was at a level that was WAY too difficult for 4th graders. Maybe they will add this capability at a lower level in the future - that would be helpful.
I made a Poll Everywhere for questions I put up when students arrive in the morning.

Hey Lisa, I THINK... that we Kahoot! has an option to download students' answers. Unless I am confusing this with another tool that we are learning about. If it does work, I think this would be super helpful as a formative assessment and the kids LOVE it!

ReplyDeleteI love Kahoot. I think their feature of sharing Kahoots is great so every teacher can find good quizzes then make some modifications and have a quiz of their own that is perfect for their class.
ReplyDeleteI am not a huge fan of Poll Everywhere. I think there are definitely some good applications for it but you can get better functionality out of other tools like Kahoot, Socrative, and Google Forms.
Lisa, I loved your Kahoot! and think it's a great idea to create fun quizzes for students! I also created a PollEverywhere but didn't like the functionality of this tool.
ReplyDeletePoll everywhere does look cool but I hesitated with the parent permission under 13. I guess I should have looked closer, it only says that for if the students wanted to create. I will have to try this I definently like the idea of short answers and getting students to use their critical thinking.
ReplyDeleteI also am a HUGE FAN of Kahoot! I like your idea, Lisa, of using Poll Everywhere as a morning check-in activity. The kids are always chomping at the bit to use the chrome books, so I think they would be tickled pink to have a legitimate reason to use them first thing in the morning!
